Agent Double-O Heaven

Last weekend, O rocked the part of Agent Double-O Heaven (get it?) in the annual church Christmas pageant. This year "Operation Baby King" was pre-recorded, so no lines to memorize. Yeah :) O was still a little nervous because his role required him to be the only character on the stage for the first few minutes of the show. But come showtime, he was fearless and brilliant! Yes, I'm biased; but as mine is the only review you'll ever read, you'll just have to trust me. Here he is as his mission assignment self-destructs.... And hanging out pre-show with his on-stage partner "Gabe," a jazzy horn-playing secret agent angel (are you sensing the theme?)...
As always, the FCC kids brought down the house. Our Christian Ed Director did an amazing job casting the show, putting each kid in a role that complemented their personality. This is a talented group that really enjoys performing, and as they have gotten older they have started to take it pretty seriously. It's been fun to watch them all move up the cast ladder from year to year. O has progressed from donkey to angel to wise camel to leading role! Next up is a play about Joseph that the kids have written themselves, which I'm sure will be another hit.

This week's sign that he's growing up

Last night after swim lessons, we finally got around to putting up ye olde Christmas tree! Well, to be honest, we got just enough decorating done so that O will stop pestering us about it for a day or so. Bah humbug, I know, but it's been that kind of week. So right now it's a lit tree with just "his" ornaments hanging on it. A little pathetic, but a step in the right direction nonetheless.
As O sorted through his box of ornaments, there were a few he didn't want to hang up this year. For the first time, he was "too old" to hang up Bob the Builder and Blue from Blue's Clues and a few others that have been near & dear until this year. On one hand, it really wasn't a big deal, but it was one of those holy-cow-look-how-big-my-kid-has-gotten moments all at the same time. One of those parenting moments when time just catches up with me, and all of a sudden I see O in a new light. And honestly, I don't mind leaving Bob & Blue in the box this year, but I'm going to have to draw a line if he ever wants to not hang up the Star Wars ornaments. A mom has her limits!!!

I love a parade--the Christmas version

We have a tradition that spans back a few years of participating in the Parade of Lights with our buddies who own a local tractor & yard equipment sales business. It is one of the highlights of our fall, and we all look forward to it with great anticipation. It is the start of the Christmas season for us. A mile marker to our fall turning to winter. A great, fun, bonding time with these beautiful friends we have here. And it's just plain fun.

But this year, I have a sinus/ear infection of historic proportions, and I know there's no way I can march in our new-this-year Power Equipment Drill Team. I am severely bummed. P is driving the tractor this year, O is a sign-barer, and I really, really, really want to march and chant and twirl with my chainsaw. What more could a parade-loving girl ask for?? But alas, I am drawn to the couch by a force more powerful than my love of parades. Eventually, my sweet husband gives me a little nudge, reminding me that this is one of my favorite things in the whole wide world, and maybe I could just come watch...

So I arrange to meet up with the Hursts to do just that, and it is so beautiful... standing with great friends, watching people who I love have an absolute ball, strolling around the square with their tractors and chainsaws and leaf blowers and snow blowers, dancing and marching and singing. It was pure JOY!!

In the process, I learned that it is difficult to take pictures of a fast-moving parade in the dark, but Jill helped me out, and we got a few decent shots. Next year, we're planning to add a Scooter Gang to the line-up, and I am so there!

Hope, in tents and otherwise

Hope has been all around us lately. It hit a zenith at about 11:01 pm on November 4th, and we're still riding that wave. As my dear friend Jill said, "Hope.... now I have some!" And I believe the text from Patty was, "Wooooooooo Hooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!" So, that about sums it up!!

Then last weekend we delivered our church's Tent of Hope to the National Mall where we set it up with other tents from all over the country. And I gotta say, it's easy to be hopeful when it's 75 and sunny in November! As always, DC brings out the presidential hopes of a certain eight year old boy, and with the excitement over the recent election this was no exception. So there were a lot of "When I'm President..." declarations while we strolled the city. In addition to the Tents of Hope festivities, on this trip we... took in the Pompeii exhibit at the National Gallery of Art, toured the Captial Building (so cool), picked John Jay's nose in the Supreme Court (family tradition), marveled at the Jefferson Memorial, browsed Thomas Jefferson's book collection at the Library of Congress, picniced on the mall, walked the dog, pushed Sophie's stroller all over Pennsylvania Avenue, hung out with our awesome brothers and their fabulous wives, ate too much, slept too little, played Wii, played with Sophie, and had yet another awesome DC weekend. It never disappoints!!

Oh, and we took 587 pictures. Gotta love digital! So P put together a video story with pics from the Gathering of the Tents. Turn up your volume and enjoy!

I'm Barack Obama, and I approve this absence!

Well, way back at the beginning of the presidential campaign, I promised O that we'd go hear his candidate, Barack Obama, before election day. AND TODAY WAS OUR DAY! Here's the story...

I got an email Saturday evening that Sen. Obama would be appearing this morning in Canton. Inside. In a theater. With real seats. Yeah! So, we flew down to Canton right that minute to pick up tickets, just making it to the campaign office before they closed at 8pm. We were literally running down the sidewalk in downtown Canton to make it in time--P sick with a sinus infection, O dressed as Harry Potter because we'd just picked him up from a Halloween party, and me on an amazing adrenaline high! I'm sure we scared all the nice campaign volunteers, but oh well.... we got our tickets! On the way down we'd called the Hursts from our Obamamobile to see if they'd like to come with us for the event, and of course they were in. I figure this kind of history lesson is better than anything the boys would have learned at school today, right?

So this morning O got to come to school with me for awhile because Jeff had to go in to take a science test. O read stories at circle time and helped me help the kids scoop out our class pumpkin. Fun! Then we picked up Jill and went to pick up Jeff from school. Oh, did I mention this was when it started snowing?!?

The doors opened for the event at 10:30 am, which was about an hour before we got in the very long, cold line to wait to get in the building. Things moved much faster than when we went to see Hillary, though, and within 40 minutes or so we were through security. Then we followed the flow of the crowd to our very-far-from-the-stage seats. But at least there were seats!!

There were a few warm-up speakers, most notably John Boccieri (trying to be the first Democrat to represent the 16th district since 1948). Followed by some chanting & a "wave" that took awhile to get going, but ended strong. Yeah for us! Then after a long, dramatic, fifteen minute pause, out came the next president of the United States...

It was a great speech, and longer than I had anticipated. The media was billing it as his "closing arguments" on the campaign, and it lived up to the billing. He covered pretty much everything, in his smooth, elegant style, punctuated by long rounds of applause. It was one of those experiences that's hard to encapsulate, which is not good for a blogger! Suffice it to say that it was all I'd hoped to hear, all I'd hoped O would hear, and what I think we need to hear as a country. Yes, We Can!!
We stuck around awhile afterwards to bask in the glow and check out the press corps. We got interviewed for NewsRadio AM 1480, but I'm sure you all heard that fine piece of journalism already, right?

We also met a very nice Secret Service agent who gave the boys some pins that he produced out of thin air. Seriously, neither Jill nor I could figure out where he got them from! Anyways, it was a long, politically charged day, and an amazing experience for the boys. They will never forget the day their super-cool moms let them skip school to go see history in action.... and that's because we'll never let them forget!!

Cub Scout Family Campout

Okay, well here is my first ever blog. This is P, often referred to but rarely heard from. I would like to share our weekend adventure.

O and I went on the Cub Scout Family Campout at Camp Manatoc in Peninsula, OH. The weather was supposed to be sunny and mid- to high-50’s. We arrived early Saturday morning, around 8:45a, to find the brave campers who stayed Friday night enjoying some camp breakfast (hash browns, eggs in bag, bacon, coffee and hot chocolate). Since we had already eaten, we skipped the opportunity to feast on some fine campfire cuisine. Around 9:15a, we hooked up with O’s old den and walked over to see the “Jamboree on the Air” ham station setup at one of the pavilions. The guy talked for about 45 minutes while the kids asked great questions like “when can we talk to someone” and “if you get too close to the antenna, can you feel the radio waves?” After running out of patience for a non-alien voice to appear over the 40M band, we hiked on to the obstacle course. O scaled the climbing wall and then ran over to the balance beam. He fell off once, but then made it all the way across!

Temp 50-ish. We hiked back to camp around 11:30a for our foil pack lunch. Adult leaders were thawing hamburgers over the open fire that could be combined with some of the frozen vegetables in the pack and cooked. I was thinking about a hamburger until someone inquired as to the whereabouts of a family who had attended last year. Another adult responded that after the extreme intestinal disorder the entire family experienced last year, they were not coming this year. Needless to say, O had the frozen veggies with some butter in his foil pack and I had two pre-cooked hot dogs in mine.

Temp still 50-ish, maybe a little colder in the shade. After lunch, we met up with O’s den and completed the Map & Compass belt loop. One of the dads is a pilot and was happy to share his knowledge. After much running around, we packed our hiking gear around 2:15p to begin bearing 140⁰ SE to the rifle range. Things were a bit backlogged, so we hiked over to a quarry and the scouts ran around for another 20 minutes or so. We hiked back to the range where each scout got to shoot a Daisy pump-action, single shot BB gun. O did really well, hitting a ping-pong ball three times, a soda can once, and the paper target three times. (Takes after his championship marksman Granddad.) I think I once hit a wooden clothespin with a BB from about 15yards away back home in the Nati…

Temp is now in the 40s. After the BB range, we went back to camp, ran around and then prepared for the spaghetti dinner that was going to be served by the Girl Scouts who camped with us. They boiled mass quantities of spaghetti in zip-loc bags, made some meat sauce and garlic bread, and put together a salad (from bags, not from nature). By the time we walked from the serving table to the eating area around the campfire, dinner was cold. O choked down most of his, I ate the rest, and then tried to get a warm plate of my own. Again, cold by the time I sat down.

Temp is still in the 40s, but getting colder. After eating, the kids ran around again and then around 6pm we lined up for our tickets to the Haunted Hayride at Camp Butler. We carpooled with O’s friend Alex and his dad (who works for P’s company’s primary competitor) and got in line for the hayride. Another dad sought out a hayride worked and asked about the start time for the rides. He was told, very specifically, that the rides would begin at the exact hour of dark o’clock. Well, on this day, dark o’clock occurred around 8pm. While we waited, the scouts ran around eating donuts and spraying each other with silly string. The hayride was fun, not too scary because of the extreme age range for the kids. We left Camp Butler and headed back to Camp Manatoc in the pitch black night.

By now it was probably in the 30’s and dark. Not city dark, but country, campground, kind of scary dark. O was exhausted, as was I, and did not seem very excited about the dump cake dessert (cake mix, pie filling and 7-up). He asked to go to bed, and I agreed. We crawled into the sleeping bags and O fell asleep almost instantly. We wore thermal undies, sweatpants, socks, t-shirts, sweatshirts, and knit caps. Throughout the night, we heard coyotes, people, raccoons, and lions and tigers and bears, oh my. Okay, maybe not the lions and tigers, but there was something making a nice scratching noise right outside our tent.

When we awoke, the temp had to be below 30. There was frost everywhere, but all that was cold was my little nose that had no protection. We had made it through the night, and went out to see what everyone else was doing. There was a healthy mix of campers who were prepared for the cold and those who were not. I felt bad for the people who were cold, because it was really, really cold. We packed everything up and came home around 9:30a. Around the fire in the morning, some of the Webelos dads were talking about their winter campout in January called Klondikes. Personally, I will need some serious practice to be ready for camping in January. Thankfully, I have a couple of years to prepare. All in all, it was fun to be in the wild with O and do the scouting activities.

The Top 4 Things about Family Campout
4. Gettin’ jiggy with nature – raccoons and other wildlife, inches from my head making squeaky and scratchy noises, outside the tent looking for food and such to feast on for the evening.
3. The amazing acoustical dynamics of the campsite – snoring from tents 100 yards away that could be heard everywhere around the site.
2. Authentic camp food – like hot chocolate, Entenmann’s donuts, cereal in the mini box with milk from a gallon jug, and frozen broccoli/carrots/peas. Compared to the stuff that Survivorman Les Stroud eats (ants, plant leaves, tree bark, crayfish, and other natural delicacies), I guess we did not have it too bad.
And….

1. Spending 25 quality hours with O, doing new stuff!

Where does the time go?

Obviously the time has not gone to blogging! So here's where it's gone lately, or at least where it's gone when my camera's been handy....

Applepicking with good friends

On the hayride out to the apple orchard

To Saturday morning soccer games (and Wednesday night practices). The big news here is that O, who happily plays defense about 90% of the time, scored a goal!!

To a super-fun birthday party!

To Pioneers in the Park. Yes, that's a real tomahawk!!

And on a Stagecoach ride with our buddies the Hursts.
Lesson learned, the stagecoach is a smelly ride!

Another brush with fame!

This past Wednesday night we joined about 500 other kids and their parents at our local Barnes & Noble to meet Mary Pope Osborne. Those of you without elementary school-aged kids most likely have no idea who she is, and thus are wondering why so many people would show up to meet her. Big fans like O, however, know her well as the author of the Magic Tree House book series. This is a favorite in our house because the main characters travel back in time to meet various historical figures via the books they find in the aforementioned Magic Tree House. You can see why the history buff would *heart* her books!

As for the event, we were maybe 100 people back in line, and we got to wait in the cookbook aisle. After staring at the titles of all the cake & cookie books for an hour or so, we were pretty hungry by the time the line started moving! My personal favorite was the Ultimate Peanut Butter book, which gave me lots of ideas even though I already firmly believe in putting peanut butter on everything. But I digress...

Our neighbor friends Maggie & Gracie were right around the corner from us in line, so we got to hang with them while we waited, and that made the hour+ go pretty quickly!

Here's the gang with their new books and then O with Mary Pope Osborne and her husband Will. Unfortunately because of the ginormous turnout they couldn't pose for pictures, but you can tell from O's smile how very exciting it was to meet them!

Bipartisan Spirit

This weekend we trekked to Dixon, Illinois for my Aunt Dorothy's memorial service. Because we were up at the crack of dawn on Saturday (thanks to the time-zone change), we had a little time on our hands before the service. Just enough time, it turned out, to visit the boyhood home of Dixon's most famous son, Ronald Reagan. So in the spirit of bipartisanship, here's a pic to counter the Hillary pic from last week.

And on the right there, you can see that Dixon, being the very respectable Land of Lincoln town that it is, also had a giant Abe statue in its riverfront Presidents Park. A two-fer for presidential photo ops in just one morning!

As for the reason for our trip, I will likely blog about that another day.... it was one of the best funerals I've been to in a long time, a real celebration of Aunt Dorothy & her life. But I'm not quite ready to go there yet today...

"I like your hat!"

"I like your hat!"--Senator Hillary Clinton, to O
After church yesterday we surprised O with a trip to Elyria to hear Hillary Clinton stump for Barack Obama.... true, this may not be what every eight year old thinks of as a fantastic way to spend a Sunday afternoon, but it is definitely this eight year old's idea of a great day! We got to hear many local "dignitaries" speak, plus the President of Puerto Rico. Muy bueno! After awhile, this got really long & boring, but he held in there through all two hours of speeches until Hillary took the stage, and that doesn't count the 45 minutes we waited in line outside to get in! We were sort of stage-left (if you consider behind the left side of the stage as stage-left), so we got to see lots of the backs of politicians' heads and lots of Secret Service activity. Pretty cool!
After Hillary's speech, we headed over stage right, where it seemed she would be exiting. Then, when she started signing autographs, we worked our way to the front of the pack. From his excellent perch on P's shoulders, O was able to get Hillary's attention. As she reached to grab the paper he was holding out, she noticed his "Seal of the President of the United States" hat that I bought him at the Ford Museum. She looked right in his little eyes and said, "I like your hat!" and gave him a big smile. And it became one of the best days EVER!!

Back to basics

We're back in the full swing of the school year here, and that means less time for things like blogging... and I miss it! I was surprised about that myself, having truly thought that I'd be a little sick of it by the end of the summer. But I really grew to enjoy it. I guess that's part of my on-going evolution, huh? Look at the old dog learning new tricks!! I know the postings will likely be less frequent for awhile, but I'm really going to try to keep it going... you know, for my loyal fans...

Anyways, in addition to the typical fall line-up of school, work, soccer, and Scouts, we have a couple of projects of note. We are still working on the guest room redo, and are hoping to start painting this weekend. Well, at least we'll spackle and maybe primer... actual paint may be overly ambitious. We have yet to reach the point of total annoyance with the state of the upstairs, so we're still moving at the get-it-done-by-Christmas pace.

We are also in the midst of trying to answer some questions that have been nagging at us for awhile... where does the money go and does it go where we want it to go? It's taken us awhile to figure out what to do to solve these head-scratchers, but we're trying a little something to at least try to gain a little insight. For the months of September, October & November our plan is to buy only what we really need, to keep track of every penny, to buy everything using cash (not even the debit card, but actually cash), and to generally try to tread lighter on the earth. So far, it's been very interesting, and not nearly as hard as one might think it would be. In just the past few weeks we've learned that...
  • nothing bad will happen to you if you don't go to Target for two weeks (and you know how I love me a little Target!)
  • you can negotiate with the cable company (to the tune of hundreds of dollars a year)
  • shopping around for home & auto insurance rates really isn't as painful as you think it will be, and there are some really decent agents out there (most notably the guy who told me to call my existing agent back and ask a very specific question that resulted in my auto rates going down about $350 per year)
  • we have a mail-order prescription plan (although the doctor has to write very specific prescriptions so you get what you think you're going to get, but either way it'll save you some bucks)
  • you spend a lot less money if you always pay in cash
And as far as the treading lighter on the earth is concerned, I found out that O's school has a paper-recycling dumpster, so I can recycle all the paper that comes through the house and earn the school a little money in the process. The irony, of course, is that most of the paper is from school (homework or memos or newsletters). You gotta wonder if they would need the recycling fundraiser if they would just send less junk home??

The final project to report on is that O & I beat the Lego Indiana Jones game for PS2 that he got for his birthday. We rock!!! Here's the photo evidence....

Time flies...

How is it possibly September?? Our summer-o-fun simply flew by too quickly! We squeezed in one last trip to the pool today on the last day of the season, topping off a fabulous Labor Day weekend. O even made several great dives off the side of the pool, something he's been working really hard to master this summer. Yeah! Here's what else the Labor Day Weekend held for us...

The weekend began with my fabulous husband arriving home from work on Friday with an industrial-strength wallpaper steamer that he rented from Home Depot. Now that's true love! Friday evening while O was out with friends and again for most of the day Saturday, we steamed, and scraped, and steamed some more. I still have some bits & pieces to tackle this week, but for the most part the walls are clear. Hoo-stinking-ray!! We are even feeling so good about our progress that we bought paint today... a lovely shade of yellow called "Pale Daffodil."

Yesterday we spent the day at the Toledo Zoo with our Michigan buddies the Boersts. It was a visit that was long overdue. It was a beautiful day and the kids had a blast exploring the zoo together while we parents sort of tagged along behind chatting. For those of you who met these guys years ago when we were still in Ypsi, you won't believe how grown-up Margaret is now. I still remember the day she was born like it was yesterday. She would have you know that she'll be 11 this year! Crazy how time flies, and flies, and flies... Here's a picture of the girls & O and then a great family shot that P took of them.
On the way home, we stopped in Milan to see if the Edison's Birthplace Museum was open (for the edification of the self-proclaimed "history buff" with whom we travel). It was not, but we stumbled upon the Milan Melon Festival and just couldn't pass that one by. It was the quintessential Ohio small-town festival. We did some world-class people-watching while we munched our kettlecorn, then O rode the most spinniest ride he could find, got a skull tattoo, and it was back on the road. As a side note, can you imagine being the Milan Melon Queen? A delicate moniker you'd have to explain to anyone outside the metropolis of Milan, I'm sure...

That brings us back to today. In addition to the pool outing, P&O rode 10 miles on the towpath this morning while I went to work for awhile. Yep, it's back to life, back to reality around here! While Melissa & I cleaned and organized at school this morning, we talked awhile about the incredible summers we had... She had set out to have no regrets this summer, to have done all she & her boys wanted to do. I had declared this the "Summer of Fun." We would have as much fun as we possibly could, every day. We both agreed it was a terrific success of a summer, and that it sure is hard to see it come to an end. Somehow declaring this season the "Fall of Fun" just doesn't sound the same!

Curses on Jean-Michel Papillon

Who is he? Well, according to Google, he was a French engraver and is considered the inventor of wallpaper, way back in 1675.

What was he thinking?!?

Today I blame dear Jean-Michel for my aching back & blistered fingers as I slowly try to turn our fourth bedroom into something (anything!) other than the Victoria's Secret showroom it has resembled since we moved in. It's slow, slow going, getting that lovely floor-to-ceiling pink & white striped paper off the walls, even with the steamer my friend lent me. To be fair, I am making some progress toward my goal to have it done by Christmas. Arrrg! In the meantime both guest rooms are out of commission, so keep that in mind it you were planning to surprise us with a visit. Plus, I'd put you to work, so if I were you I'd make some new plans :)

Third Grade!

There he is, my big, giant third grader! O woke up today with just the tiniest case of nerves about school. By the time we walked there and met up with a few friends, though, he was back to being so very excited! By all reports the entire day lived up to his expectations. He had only good things to say about the day, his classmates, his teacher, and school in general. He had homework tonight, but it was fun homework, and even that was fine with him. What a great start to the school year!

Two Peas in a Pod

O and I got to spend some quality time with our good friends the Goodwins today. Their son Zach and O have been two peas in a pod since about the day they were born. Somehow summer schedules proved even busier than school-year schedules, and we hadn't seen them since Spring.... gasp!!! But these two picked up right where they'd left off, filling their afternoon with Legos, baseball cards, pretending and generally enjoying each others' company. Mere & I got to talk the afternoon away while playing with Elena... what a treat! Ryan even got home a little early from work, so I got to see him, too. He's about the only person from high school I see with any regularity, and I'm particularly proud to say "I knew him when...." given that he's a hall of famer now. (Couldn't resist it, Ry!)

This evening we headed up to school for "Meet the Teacher" night. Mrs. Bryan is super nice, the trailer classroom is awesomely air-conditioned, and O is psyched for school to start on Thursday! I still can't believe how quickly our Summer of Fun has flown-by...

Mrs. Bryan, Foul Ball & Clone Wars

We've had a busy fun-packed 24 hours here...

Yesterday afternoon we trekked up to school with our neighbors for the ceremonial posting-of-the-class-lists. O was so very excited to learn that he will have Mrs. Bryan for third grade (his #1 choice) and that he has a really great group of kids in his class. This will be his first year in a trailer, and he is especially excited about the air conditioning! He also received a letter in the mail from Mrs. Bryan today, and we got excited all over again for school to start on Thursday!

Then last night we went to the Aeros game with a group of friends from church. (It was so much fun last time, we figured we'd do it again, this time with fireworks.) We sat really close along the first base line, and O managed to catch a foul ball (with an assist from dad)!!! He was so stinkin' excited. He held on to that thing all night like it was his Wonka Golden Ticket. We also took pictures with Orbit, chowed on yummy pricy snacks, and got some autographs from the stars of the future of the New Britain RockCats.

Today we rounded out the big 8th b-day celebration by taking some buddies to see the new Star Wars movie. I'm being kind to say that cinematically, it was lacking, but the boys loved it. O really was thrilled to celebrate with his good friends and the entire galactic alliance. Here's the crew at DQ before the movie and then with all their testosterone a-blazin' afterwards...

"Nice Gorge!"

That was the exclaimation from O as we & the Brubaker Herd entered Brandywine Gorge this morning, and what a nice gorge it was! It had taken longer than anticipated to reach the promised water because when we tried to go to Blue Hen Falls we were foiled by construction projects. So we backtracked to Brandywine Falls, where we got to meet up with Baba, too!! But it was about half-way through our hike by the time the boys got to play in the creek, and they were more than ready. We played for quite awhile... exploring, skipping rocks, looking for fish, making ginormous splashes with big rocks, and just getting good & wet... and then we hiked up to Brandywine Falls, where we had started our day. The boys are still really fast on the trail, not nearly as apt as Mom, Melissa & I are to just take in our surroundings, but we all had a great time! There wasn't much water going over the falls today, so we promised to take them back in the spring when they're really roaring. Can't wait!

Great 8th Birthday

Having a summer birthday is really a lot of fun!! This year, O's big 8th birthday coinsided with some McFamily coming into town (Nana & Grand-dad, Auntie E, Uncle Ry and Sophie). So we invited a few good friends and Baba & Gumpa to join the McCrowd to celebrate on Saturday afternoon. We had a few of O's favorite foods for lunch-- pizza, watermelon, DQ cake--and then headed outside for a big giant water battle and some slip'n'sliding. As you see in the pics, kids of ALL ages had a ball!

On the actual birthday day, Baba & I took the b-day boy to the Science Center. We got to explore the exhibits, watch an IMAX movie, learn about Einstein, and explore the Mather. We topped the afternoon off with a humongous sundae at the Honey Hut. In the evening we had dinner at Applebee's, ate some more ice cream, and opened presents with Daddy. We even managed to squeeze in a little Playstation Indiana Jones between birthday greeting phone calls. It was really a great day. We'll continue the celebration in a few weeks when we go to see the new Star Wars "Clone Wars" movie with some buddies (the movie doesn't open til the 15th).

There are, of course, more pics to see on Smugmug. Both grandma's are having trouble viewing pics, so I'm trying a new way to link... leave us a comment to let us know if this works!

So far, O thinks 8 is pretty great! I'm still a little awed by the fact that he's eight years old!! And a third grader!! Frankly, it's a little much for mom at this point. This of course is confounded by the fact that summer flew by entirely too fast and school starts two weeks from today. We are so not ready for that...
